Book art

The manuscript database orient-digital includes a module for book art cataloguing miniatures, illustrations and illuminations of all Oriental manuscripts the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin holds. In a first project phase all book art elements Islamic manuscripts of the Berlin collection contain were recorded and described. The database comprises ca. 8200 entries on book art from 310 Persian, Arabic, Ottoman-Turkic and Javanese manuscripts being characterized by general information such as classmark, catalogue number and short title, formal information such as sizes, dates and places of origins and descriptions. Gradually we intend to complement the current dataset with Indian, Armenian, Hebrew and African book art elements. Diverse search patterns such as type (calligraphy, illumination, illustration), motifs and full text allow a pinpoint search of the book art entries. Moreover, they are linked with the main entry of the respective manuscript enabling a further contextualization.
